Ignatius Baffour Awuah, the owner and bankroller of Nsoatreman FC, was taken into custody by the Bono Regional Police Headquarters after altercations broke out during a Ghana Premier League game.
The incident happened on Sunday at Nana Kronmansah Park during the Matchday 19 match between Nsoatreman FC and Asante Kotoko.
As players and officials got into physical altercations during the tumultuous encounter, Francis Yaw Frimpong, often known as “Pooley,” an Asante Kotoko supporter, tragically died.Unknown attackers are said to have fatally stabbed Frimpong.
Former Sunyani West Constituency Member of Parliament and Minister of Employment and Labour Relations Baffour Awuah was detained on suspicion of conspiring to commit murder. Additionally, he is charged with instigating supporters, which is said to have played a role in the deadly altercation.
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has placed Nana Kronmansah Park under indefinite suspension in response to the violence.
To resolve the situation, the GFA has also set up an emergency meeting for Thursday and Friday with Premier League teams, important stakeholders, and supporters’ organizations.
In addition, Lydia Donkor, a Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP), has been tasked with spearheading the incident’s investigations as authorities seek to hold those account.
Two other persons have also been arrested by the police.
