Ghana is holding its much-anticipated general election to choose a president and 276 members of parliament, and voting has begun nationwide.
A dozen contenders are running for the presidency in what many consider to be one of the most contentious elections in Ghana’s history.
Former President John Dramani Mahama of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) and Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) are the front-runners; both have launched strong campaigns.
The election will also decide the makeup of Ghana’s parliament, which would consist of 276 members.
People have been waiting in line to cast their ballots since polling places opened at 7:00 AM.
Election officials are working to guarantee that the election is conducted securely and smoothly.
