Alan’s Continued Affiliation with the NPP Could Have Posed a Greater Threat to NPP’s Unity- Kofi Tonto
Speaking by phone on the Live Maakye Show, Kofi Tonto, a political aide to Dr. Bawumia, discussed Dr. Bawumia’s campaign tour in the Ashanti Region. He stated that Alan’s continued association with the New Patriotic Party (NPP) would have posed an even greater risk to the party’s unity.
Tonto emphasized that Alan’s presence would have led to more internal friction than the division seen ahead of the 2008 general elections when party members were split in their support between Alan Kojo Kyerematen and Nana Akufo-Addo.
He acknowledged that Alan Kyerematen, who has now separated from the NPP, still enjoys a loyal following in the Ashanti Region, a stronghold for the party.
However, he suggested that, due to Alan’s departure, supporters who might have aligned with him may no longer feel bound to do so and would instead rally behind the party.
Kofi Tonto highlighted how former followers of Alan, such as Collins Owusu Amankwah and Bortianor, are now campaigning vigorously for the NPP, underscoring their loyalty to the party.
He expressed his relief, saying, “I would have been more worried if Alan were still in the party right now.”
This comment was in response to host Frimpong Ziega’s question about whether Alan Kyerematen’s departure from the NPP might have affected the party’s standing with its supporters in its ongoing Ashanti Region tour.
Tonto explained that many people previously supported Alan largely due to his NPP affiliation, making it unlikely they would extend the same level of support now that he has joined a new party, the Movement for Change.
He added that Alan’s separation from the NPP has made party members more clear and resolute in their support for the party.
