CDS Africa Launches “Market Women for Peaceful Polls” Initiative

As Ghana prepares for its presidential and legislative elections on December 7, CDS Africa has launched an inspiring initiative called “Market Women for Peaceful Polls.” This program aims to educate market women about peace, democracy, and their civic responsibility, recognizing their significant influence in their communities.

*Key Objectives:*

– *Promote Peace*: Educate market women on the importance of peace and tolerance during the election period.

– *Foster Democracy*: Empower market women to exercise their civic rights and participate in the democratic process.

– *Civic Responsibility*: Encourage market women to take an active role in promoting peaceful elections and democratic values.

The initiative kicked off at Neoplan Station, with upcoming stops scheduled at Madina market on November 15 and Dome market on November 22. CDS Africa’s efforts align with global initiatives promoting women’s meaningful participation in peace processes. Research has shown that women’s involvement in peacebuilding and mediation leads to lasting, positive peace.

Ms. Celestina Damoah, Advocacy and Public Engagement Coordinator at CDS Africa, emphasized that the rationale behind this initiative is to create more public awareness for the December polls.

The Convention People’s Party (CPP) presidential candidate, Nana Akosua Frimpomaa Sarpong Kumankumah, also appealed to Ghanaians to consider her as the only female contender in the upcoming elections. She expressed dismay over the current state of parliamentary proceedings and urged members to prioritize the rule of law and serve the citizens who elected them.
