“We’re Drinking Death & There’s No One to Save Us” – #FreeTheCitizens #StopGalamseyNow begin 3 days demo
On Thursday, October 3, in Accra, the three-day #FreeTheCitizens and #StopGalamseyNow demonstration got underway.
The purpose of the event is to call for the prompt release of 53 demonstrators from Democracy Hub who were detained last week during an anti-galamsey demonstration.
Additionally, it aimed to increase public awareness of the continuous harm that illegal mining (galamsey) is causing to the environment.
The march began at Legon, the Okponglo traffic light, went to the Airport traffic light, the National Service Secretariat, the Parliament building, and the Electoral Commission office before coming to a finish at Independence Square.
It is anticipated that the demonstrators will seek the Attorney General to free the 53 protestors who have been placed under remand.
Black-clad protestors held signs that said things like, “We’re Drinking Death & There’s No One to Save Us,” “Leaders, You’ve Failed Us,” and “Tweeting Alone Won’t Solve the Galamsey Problem.”
Throughout the march, security was provided by the Ghana Police Service, guaranteeing a calm and well-organized protest.
