“NAGRAT President Calls for Improvements in Education Sector Ahead of 2024 Elections
As Ghana approaches the 2024 general elections, various political parties have unveiled their manifestos, including proposals for the education sector. Eric Angel Carbonu, President of the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), has shared his thoughts on the manifestos, highlighting omissions and concerns.
Carbonu met with delegations from the NPP and NDC to discuss their education plans. He questioned the NDC’s promise of free first-year tuition at public universities, asking about the funding source and sustainability of the policy.
Moreover, Carbonu called for the scrapping of the double-tracking system in the free SHS policy, citing delays in academic studies, overworked teachers, and lazy students. He advocated for a return to the traditional academic calendar and proper planning to address classroom shortages.
Additionally, Carbonu opposed alphabetical grading of schools, which he believes fosters favoritism. Instead, he suggested building more school facilities and providing sanitary pads for female students, who often struggle to afford them during their menstrual cycles.
NAGRAT’s concerns and recommendations aim to improve the education sector and ensure that any future government prioritizes the needs of students, teachers, and schools.”
