If you vote for me as president I will abolish E-levy, Betting tax & emissions tax – Bawumia tells Ghanaians

The presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has stated that if elected, he will do away with the e-levy, a tax on electronic financial transactions.

Dr. Bawumia vehemently criticized electronic transaction taxes in his first speech as the NPP flagbearer, underscoring his resolve to eliminating the e-levy and emphasizing how it interferes with his vision of a digital and cashless Ghana.

“To transition to a cashless economy, we need to encourage the use of electronic payment channels. To facilitate this, there will be no taxes on digital payments under my administration. Therefore, the e-levy will be abolished.”

Dr. Bawumia also announced the government’s plans to restructure the tax code, which include doing away with the betting tax, the pollution tax, and the projected 15% value-added tax on power rates, all of which are expected to be put into effect by January 2025.

In order to support both residents and businesses, he also unveiled proposals for a flat tax regime that would be easy on businesses and especially beneficial to small and medium-sized firms (SMEs).
