Playing AFCON is more difficult than the World Cup  – Dede Ayew

Andre “Dede” Ayew has bemoaned the challenges facing the AFCON in his role as captain of the Black Stars.

He said that even though the FIFA World Cup has been around for a long time, winning is difficult for African nations.

Tuesday night, in the presence of Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo and Minister Mustapha Ussif, Ayew delivered the remarks during a farewell dinner in Kumasi.

“This tournament is even harder than the World Cup,” he said.

“We know that it is the hardest tournament, for me, in the world when it comes to fighting, determination, and energy so the only way we can do this is by being together and being united, and for that Your Excellency, I can assure you that we are united and we want to do it,”

The Black Stars left Kumasi on Wednesday and arrived in Ivory Coast in the afternoon.

The tournament is scheduled to start on Saturday, January 13, 2024, and run through February 11, 2024.

The Black Stars will play Egypt on January 18, Mozambique on January 22, and Cape Verde on January 14, 2024, in Group B.

Ayew has played for Ghana in both the African Football Confederation Cup and the World Cup. He was a member of the Black Stars squad that made it to the quarterfinals of the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.
