Solar Light nominated for West African Power awards

Solar Light Company is the only Ghanaian nominee in the West African Power Industry awards.
The Accra-based company which provides solar electric systems in Ghana and other West African countries is nominated under the Best Rural Electrification Project and is pitted against Alternative Energy Inc (Liberia) and NewEnergy (Nigeria).
In August, Solar Light Company won a $100,000 award in the Power Africa Off-Grid Energy Challenge, sponsored by General Electric (GE), United States Africa Development Foundation (USADF), and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
The company is prototyping and locally manufacturing the “Sunana” system, a portable solar unit that street vendors can use to charge mobile phones and provide lighting.
The nominations in other categories are dominated by Nigerian firms and individuals, and nominees include government officials, industry stakeholders, corporate organisations and private businesses.
The accolades will be conferred in Lagos on Tuesday, November 18.
Nominated the Lifetime Achievement Award are Dr Sam Amadi, Executive Chairman, Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), Babatunde Fashola, Governor of Lagos State and Professor Bart Okechukwu Nnaji, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Geometric Power Limited, who is also the former Nigerian Minister of Power.
The Outstanding Woman in Power nominees are Agatha Nnaji, Managing Director, Geometric Power, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Finance Minister, and Olubukola Osiberu, General Manager of Ikeja Distribution Company (IKEDC).
The Best Renewable Energy Project is contested for by Nigerian firms Ginphed, O.T. Otis Engineering, Quintas, and TopStep. ABB (Nigeria), O.T. Otis Engineering (Nigeria) and West African Power Pool, Benin Power are vying for the Transaction of the Year.
The Excellence in Power Generation will see Nigerian trio, Clarke Energy, Seven Energy and Wrtsilà contest. Leading executives from across the power, renewable energy, finance and investment spheres will attend the event.
The global networking and telecommunications giant, Huawei, recently confirmed its exclusive diamond sponsorship for the awards.
Other leading industry names such as the Nigerian IPP Genesis Electricity Limited (GEL) and Aiteo Power Generation and Distribution Company have also signed up as platinum sponsors for the event.
“This is the West African utility industry celebrating its heroes and success stories. It is for the industry and by the industry,” said the awards’ programme director Irene Ochem.
