Former Student Leader, Iddi Muhayu-Deen, Called To The Bar
Iddi Muhayu-Deen, a former General Secretary of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS), and a Press Aide to the NPP General Secretary, was, on Friday, October 20, 2023, called to the Bar at the 60th ‘Call to the Bar’ ceremony held at the Accra International Conference Centre.
The event was organized by the General Legal Council and chaired by Her Ladyship the Chief Justice, Justice Getrude Torkonoo, to enrol some one thousand and ninety-seven lawyers (1,097) who have attained the necessary standards of proficiency in the law and obtained adequate practical experience in the law.
Prior to reading law, Iddi was a professional teacher with the Ghana Education Service after obtaining the necessary qualifying certificates from the Tamale College of Education and the University of Education Winneba, Kumasi Campus, now, AAMUSTED, where he pursued a Bachelor of Science degree in Information Technology Education. He also holds a Diploma in Accounting and Business, ACCA-UK.
Iddi left the Ghana Education Service in 2017 and enrolled at the Faculty of Law, GIMPA, for an LLB degree programme, and then proceeded to the Ghana School of Law in 2021 to pursue the Professional Law Course, graduating in October 2023.
In a facebook post on 21st October, 2023, i.e. a day after the Call, Iddi, a prolific writer and columnist in some Ghanaian Dailies and online news portals, thanked the Vice President of the Republic, H.E. Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, for sponsoring his legal education. He also disclosed that he is the first lawyer in his family, and indeed, in the whole of Kete-Krachi Zongo, where he hails from.
Iddi Muhayu-Deen has been at the NPP headquarters specifically at the Office of the General Secretary, as a Press Aide, since 2017. He worked closely with the immediate past General Secretary, John Boadu, and currently with Justin Frimpong Kodua (JFK), the NPP’s Chief Scribe.
Iddi also served as a Member and Secretary to several committees of the Party, including the National Parliamentary Vetting Committee-(2020); Secretary to the NPP Parliamentary Candidates Verification Committee for election 2020 chaired by Lawyer Frank Davies; Secretary to the National Appeals Committee (2021) chaired by Hon. Dan Botwe; and Secretary to the Committee that drafted the NPP’s Code of Conduct for Presidential primaries in 2021 chaired by Lawyer Frank Davies.
He is currently serving as the Secretary to the NPP Constitution Review Committee, which is being chaired by Hon Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Member of Parliament for Effutu Constituency and current Deputy Majority Leader in Parliament.
Other notable personalities that were called to the Bar at the 60th enrolment ceremony included Hon. Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, Minister for Foreign Affairs; Sammi Awuku, the Director-General of NLA; Hon. Ekow Vincent Assafuah, MP for Old Tafo; Charles Owusu, CEO of Petroleum Hub Development Corporation; Zelia Amsat Osman, Aide to the Second Lady, H.E Samira Bawumia; and Ms. Sandra Frimpong (aka Maame Broni), a Media Personality.
