U-20 Women’s World Cup: Ghana coach gives up on qualification despite slim chance
Ghana coach Ben Fokuo has given up on progressing to the next stage of the U-20 Women’s World Cup following Sunday’s defeat to Japan, despite the Black Princesses having a slim chance of doing so.
Princesses were defeated 2-0, with Japan scoring both goals from the penalty spot in the second half. The defeat came on the heels of a 3-0 loss to the United States on Thursday.
Ghana have a slim chance of qualifying after the Netherlands stunned the United States 3-0 to open up the group. Japan leads with nine points, followed by the United States and the Netherlands, each with three, and Ghana with none.
However, Ghana can advance to the next round if they defeat the Netherlands in their final game, while Japan defeats the United States.
“It is unfortunate we lost our second group game which means for the 6th attempt, we won’t make it past the group stage,” Fokuo said.
“Our first half performance was better than the second half. We started the second half on a better note until we conceded the penalty which I think pushed the girls down a little bit.
He continued: “We conceded another penalty and it is unfortunate to concede through a penalty but I think we played better than our first game.
“We wanted to go at least to the quarter-finals but that didn’t happen. It is sad not to make it this time again so we will go back and work hard so that in the next edition, we will try our best to make it from the group stage.”
Ghana will play Netherlands on Wednesday.
