Ghana Airways will return before I leave office – President Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has expressed hope that Ghana’s defunct national airline, Ghana Airways, will be revived before the end of his tenure, as part of efforts to strengthen the country’s transport sector and accelerate economic development.

Speaking at the Russia University of Transport, President Mahama said his government was pursuing several transport infrastructure projects, including the expansion of ports, roads, airports and railway networks, to improve connectivity and support economic growth.

He said the government was also working towards restoring the national airline, which ceased operations years ago, stressing that its return remained one of his aspirations before leaving office.

“Even as I speak, we are working on revamping our cherished national airline, which went defunct, Ghana Airways,” he said.

“And as I said, it is my hope that before I leave office, we will have Ghana Airways back in the air,” President Mahama added.

The President said transport systems were critical drivers of national development, noting that the progress of countries throughout history had been supported by investments in railways, highways, shipping facilities and aviation.

“Transport systems are an important catalyst to development, and throughout history, the pace of progress of nations has been advanced by the great railways, the great highways, the shipping facilities, and aviation,” he said.

President Mahama said Ghana recognised the importance of an efficient transport network and was committing resources to modernising infrastructure across the country.

He cited the expansion of existing port facilities, road reconstruction projects under the government’s Big Push programme, airport expansion and the construction of three new regional airports as part of the ongoing investments.

He added that work was also progressing on new freight trains and the extension of the railway network to improve the movement of goods and people.

The President said the projects formed part of the government’s broader efforts to build a modern transport system capable of supporting trade, industrialisation and long-term national development.

The proposed revival of Ghana Airways would mark a significant development in the country’s aviation sector, although President Mahama’s remarks did not provide a specific timeline for the airline’s return to operations.
