SAD NEWS: Sekondi fishing canoe & 7 crew members missing for 11 days, Marine Police lead search

The Western Regional Marine Police Command has launched a coordinated search for a missing fishing canoe, Second Chance, and its seven crew members.
In a police statement issued on October 20, the owner of the canoe, Nana Kweku Atta, was said to have reported the incident at the Fishing Harbour Police Station in Sekondi on October 18.
According to the report, the canoe left the Sekondi Fishing Harbour on October 9, 2026, for a fishing expedition off the coast of Axim but has since failed to return.
Preliminary investigations indicate that repeated attempts to reach the crew have been unsuccessful.
A subsequent update suggested that the canoe may have developed engine problems and drifted towards Tema and the Volta coast. However, authorities are yet to establish its last known position.
The Western Regional Marine Police Command is collaborating with the Ghana Navy, Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA), Fisheries Commission and local fishing communities to locate the missing canoe and its crew.
The Western Naval Command, relevant coastal police stations, chief fishermen and the Eastern Naval Command in Tema have also been alerted to support the search operation.
Police say efforts are underway to establish the canoe’s last known location and determine the whereabouts of the seven crew members.
Meanwhile, fishing communities along the coast have been urged to report any sightings or information that could assist in locating the canoe and its crew to the nearest police station.
