Messi signs off with one final show for Argentina

Lionel Messi has officially ended his illustrious international career, signing off in memorable fashion as Argentina defeated Benin 3-0 in Buenos Aires on Tuesday night.
In front of an emotional home crowd, the Argentina captain received a fitting farewell after a remarkable international journey that saw him overcome years of disappointment to become one of the most decorated players in football history.
The celebrations began in the 10th minute when play was halted and the packed stadium rose to applaud Messi. The legendary number 10 stood at the centre of the occasion, acknowledging the fans who have witnessed some of the greatest moments in Argentina’s football history.
Benin, however, refused to be overwhelmed by the occasion. The West African side defended resolutely and threatened Argentina on the counter, forcing goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez to make several important saves in the opening half.
Argentina dominated possession but struggled to create clear-cut opportunities. Messi came close on two occasions before the break, but neither side managed to find the breakthrough as the first half ended goalless.
The second half produced the moments the home crowd had been waiting for.
Messi first made his mark as a creator, delivering a dangerous corner which Nicolás Otamendi converted with a superb volley to give Argentina the lead.
The captain then turned provider again, setting up Nico Paz, who unleashed a stunning long-range strike to double Argentina’s advantage.
The defining moment came with about 20 minutes remaining when Argentina were awarded a penalty.
Messi stepped up and, with the composure that has characterised his career, sent the goalkeeper the wrong way before calmly finding the back of the net.
The goal marked Messi’s final strike for Argentina.
When the final whistle sounded, Buenos Aires erupted in celebration as Messi completed his farewell appearance for the Albiceleste with a goal and two assists.
His international journey has been defined by both heartbreak and triumph, from defeats in major finals to lifting the Copa América and eventually leading Argentina to World Cup glory.
Messi now leaves the Argentina national team as a world champion, record-breaker and enduring icon of Argentine football, bringing an extraordinary international career to a memorable close in front of the fans who have celebrated him for generations.
