EOCO Officers Clash with Manhyia South MP Over Arrest Attempt
Tension erupted at the Accra High Court on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, when security personnel reportedly clashed with Manhyia South MP and lawyer for detained nurse Salomey Baffoe Awiti, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah.
The incident occurred during a scheduled bail hearing for the 40-year-old senior nursing officer, who is facing a charge of abetment of crime in connection with the publication of alleged false news.
Videos circulating online showed a confrontation at the court premises involving security officers and members of the defence team.
In one of the videos, a female security officer was seen attempting to prevent the MP from leaving in his vehicle. A verbal exchange followed, leading to a physical confrontation between the security personnel and members of the legal team.
A member of the defence team subsequently opened the vehicle door and cleared the way for Nana Baffour Awuah to leave the premises. Security personnel were seen briefly pursuing his vehicle.
Sources close to the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) claimed the incident followed an attempt to apprehend the Manhyia South MP over allegations that he had failed to respond to invitations to assist with investigations into the controversial “Ghana Jollof” TikTok account.
However, sources close to the MP disputed the claim, saying he had not received any official invitation. They alleged that the attempted arrest was politically motivated and linked to his public defence of Salomey Baffoe Awiti.
EOCO had not issued an official statement on the incident at the time of reporting.
Salomey Baffoe Awiti, a 40-year-old mother of three from Hansua in the Techiman Municipality, has been in state custody following her arrest.
She is facing a charge of abetment of crime, specifically the publication of false news, in connection with the “Ghana Jollof” TikTok account.
Authorities allege that the account has been used to publish content critical of government officials.
Police say forensic investigations into the nurse’s phone records and mobile money transactions linked her to Barbara Asantewaa Kodua, who is alleged to be the main operator of the account and is reportedly based in the United Kingdom.
Nana Baffour Awuah has previously criticised the detention of the nurse, arguing that her continued custody is unjustified since investigators have identified the alleged principal suspect as being outside the country.
The legal teams appeared before the High Court on Wednesday for the scheduled bail application.
However, the prosecution requested additional time to respond to the defence’s submissions.
The court subsequently adjourned the bail hearing to Thursday, September 24, 2026, for further proceedings.
