Residents around Weija told to evacuate as GWL resume spillage of water from Weija dam from Wednesday September 9
Residents living downstream of the Weija Dam have been advised to evacuate their homes ahead of the planned resumption of excess-water spillage from the dam on Wednesday, September 9, 2026.
In a press statement issued on Monday, September 7, Ghana Water Ltd (GWL) said the precautionary measure had become necessary after the dam’s water level rose to 45.2 feet, approaching the 46-foot critical threshold.
According to GWL, the increase has been driven by heavy rainfall upstream, as well as continued rains within the catchment area of the Densu River and its tributaries.
The company urged residents in affected areas to remain vigilant, comply with official evacuation directives and avoid activities that could put their lives and property at risk.
Communities identified as potentially affected include Tetegu, Oblogo, Pambros Salt, Lower McCarthy Hill, Lower Weija, Bojo Beach, Ada Kopey and other surrounding areas.
Authorities urged to prepare
GWL has also called on the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), the District Assembly, traditional authorities, Assembly Members, residents’ associations and other relevant stakeholders to take precautionary measures and prepare for a possible evacuation.
The company said it is closely monitoring developments and will continue to provide updates as the situation evolves.
GWL reaffirmed that the safety of residents remains its top priority and appealed to the public to cooperate with authorities to ensure a safe and orderly evacuation.
The company stressed that continued public cooperation would be crucial as efforts are made to manage the rising water levels and protect communities downstream of the dam.
