Sports apparel brand Capelli says it is taking its next big step in Africa with the Tampico Accra Inter City Marathon, building on its visibility at the FIFA World Cup with the Cape Verde national team.
Speaking at the grand launch of the marathon at Zimansky Hotel, Roman Ridge on Tuesday, Danny Anjiloray, Head of Department for Marketing, Research & Development at Acadia and Interbrand, said Capelli’s move into running aligns with its broader sports strategy across the continent.
“The good news about Capelli is that we saw what was done in the World Cup with Cape Verde. The official kit of the Cape Verdeans were the Capelli kits that they wore,” Anjiloray said. “Capelli is not new in Africa. For some of us that we know Inter Allies and we know Kotoku Royals, their official jerseys are being kitted by Capelli. So Capelli is not new to African sport.”
Beyond Football
Anjiloray stressed that while Capelli has strong roots in football, the brand is deliberately expanding into other disciplines.
“Capelli is not just focused on just football, but we understand sporting fraternity, or disciplines if I can say,” he explained. “We also have kits that also support other various sporting activities: basketball, soccer, baseball, cricket, and even running and cycling and the likes of it.”
He said partnering with the Accra Inter City Marathon was a strategic decision to associate with activities that “celebrate the interests of Africans, or shall I say the interests of Ghanaians.”
“We Are Moving to the Next Level”
According to Anjiloray, the marathon represents the next phase of Capelli’s growth in Ghana and across Africa.
“You understand our journey and how it has been very strategic for us. We are not just stopping at the World Cup. We are moving to the next level, and we believe this activity is the next level,” he said.
The Tampico Accra Inter City Marathon was launched as part of the National Sports Authority’s wider “reset” agenda, with a focus on community engagement, youth development, and corporate support for athletics.
With Capelli now on board, organizers say the event gains international sportswear credibility as it seeks to position Accra’s road race among the top city marathons on the continent.
