Interfaith memorial service held to honour victims of 2025 military helicopter crash
An interfaith memorial service is underway at the UPSA Auditorium in Madina, Accra, to mark the first anniversary of the tragic Ghana Air Force helicopter crash on August 6, 2025, which claimed the lives of eight prominent Ghanaians.
The National Inter-Faith Memorial Service, which commenced at 8:30 a.m., is being attended by President John Dramani Mahama, Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, bereaved families, government officials, and members of the public.
The ceremony has brought together people from different faiths to honour and remember the eight individuals who lost their lives in the crash, now widely referred to as the “Departed Eight.”
Among those who perished were the Minister for Defence, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, and the Minister for Environment, Alhaji Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, who were travelling aboard the Ghana Air Force helicopter when it crashed en route to Obuasi.
As part of the day’s commemorative activities, the Ministry of Defence is expected to unveil a memorial cenotaph in honour of the victims later today.
