Frank Lampard Targets Surprise Coventry Reunion With Chelsea Winger

Frank Lampard is reportedly exploring an ambitious move to bring Chelsea winger Mykhailo Mudryk to Coventry City on loan as the newly promoted Premier League side looks to strengthen its squad ahead of the new season.

According to reports, Lampard is hoping to use his strong ties with Chelsea to secure a temporary deal for the Ukrainian international, giving the 25-year-old an opportunity to rebuild his career after spending nearly two years away from competitive football due to an anti-doping suspension.

Mudryk, who played eight matches under Lampard during the former Chelsea manager’s second spell in charge at Stamford Bridge, is believed to be one of the attacking options Lampard wants to add as Coventry prepare for life back in England’s top flight.

Coventry Face Competition

Coventry are not the only club interested in the winger. Reports claim that two other Premier League teams, along with three clubs from across Europe, are monitoring Mudryk’s situation.

A loan move is viewed as a solution that could benefit both Chelsea and the player. It would allow Mudryk to regain match fitness and confidence with regular first-team football while reducing the pressure that comes with playing at Stamford Bridge.

Mudryk Cleared After Doping Case

Mudryk completed an £89 million move to Chelsea, including add-ons, in January 2023 but saw his career interrupted after being provisionally suspended in November 2024 following a positive test for the banned substance meldonium.

The Football Association has now concluded its investigation, with the Ukrainian accepting an anti-doping rule violation and agreeing to a suspension that matched the period he had already served. As a result, he is now eligible to resume his professional career.

Speaking after the case was resolved, Mudryk described the ordeal as the toughest period of his football journey.

“This has been the most difficult period of my career. As I have always maintained, I have never knowingly or intentionally taken any banned substance. My commitment to competing fairly and representing my club and country with professionalism and integrity has always been important to me. I would like to thank my family and friends for their support throughout this difficult time.”

Xabi Alonso Urges Patience

Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso has welcomed Mudryk’s return but stressed that the winger will need time before returning to full competitive action.

Alonso admitted that the timing of the decision came as a surprise and explained that the club must first assess Mudryk’s physical condition after such a lengthy spell away from football.

The Chelsea manager said it is still too early to determine when the winger will be ready for regular matches but expressed happiness that the player can finally move forward after enduring a difficult chapter in his career.

Alonso also confirmed that Mudryk will travel with Chelsea’s squad for their pre-season tour of Hong Kong, although he revealed the pair had not yet had the opportunity to speak in person.

A loan switch to Coventry could now offer Mudryk the ideal platform to rediscover his form, while giving Lampard an exciting attacking option as the Sky Blues prepare for their Premier League campaign.
