Emmanuel Victor Paa Asante, a grandson of the late Victor Owusu, the Popular Front Party (PFP) presidential candidate in Ghana’s 1979 general election, has officially declared his intention to contest for the position of Deputy Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) UK Branch.
Announcing his decision, Mr. Asante said he was offering himself for service with a commitment to strengthening the party’s structures, promoting unity and enhancing its effectiveness ahead of future electoral contests.
“I am honoured to officially declare my intention to contest for the position of Deputy Secretary of the NPP UK Branch,” he stated.
He noted that his decision was backed by grassroots experience, disciplined leadership and a strong commitment to service, adding that he was ready to contribute to building “a stronger, more organised and forward-looking NPP.”
His campaign has adopted the slogan, “Think Paa Asante, Think Victory 2028.”
Historic Political Lineage
Mr. Asante’s declaration carries historical significance within the Danquah-Dombo-Busia political tradition from which the NPP traces its roots.
His grandfather, Victor Owusu, led the Popular Front Party (PFP), one of the antecedent political parties of the NPP, and was the main challenger to Dr. Hilla Limann in Ghana’s 1979 presidential election.
Political observers have often argued that the election was influenced by divisions within the Danquah-Dombo-Busia tradition, with William Ofori Atta (Paa Willi), who contested on the ticket of the United National Convention (UNC), another antecedent party of the NPP, splitting support that might otherwise have consolidated behind Victor Owusu.
Supporters of Mr. Asante believe his decision to seek office within the NPP UK Branch reflects the party’s continuing efforts to strengthen internal cohesion and reinforce the unity of the Danquah-Dombo-Busia tradition as it prepares for the 2028 general elections.
His campaign is expected to focus on organisational efficiency, grassroots mobilisation and strengthening engagement among members of the NPP UK Branch.
