The University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS), in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation, Ghana, the University of Missouri, USA, and international partners from the Netherlands, will host the 1st International AI in Healthcare Conference in Ghana from 4th–5th August 2026 at the UHAS campus in Ho.
Under the theme, “Implementing AI in Healthcare in Ghana: From Vision and Policy to Practice and Impact,” the conference seeks to create a national platform for policymakers, healthcare professionals, academics, researchers, technology innovators, entrepreneurs, development partners, and students to explore practical pathways for accelerating the adoption and integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into Ghana’s healthcare and pharmaceutical systems.
As AI continues to reshape healthcare globally, the conference will provide an opportunity for stakeholders to examine how emerging technologies can support improved clinical care; disease prevention, surveillance, analytics and prediction; research; pharmaceutical development; regulation; and overall health system efficiency while ensuring responsible, ethical, and equitable adoption.
The two-day conference will feature keynote addresses, panel discussions, technical sessions, AI adoption showcases, and workshops focused on critical areas including hospital implementation of AI, data infrastructure and interoperability, ethics and governance, education, research, and talent development.
Beyond the conference, there will be a convening of healthcare and Pharma leaders on the 6th of August for roundtable discussions focused on developing agentic AI systems as the backbone to support sustainable health financing, clinical research, vaccine and pharma development, and overall health leadership in Ghana and the sub-region
Speaking ahead of the conference, Professor (Med) Alexander Ansah Manu, Director of the UHAS Institute of Health Research and Convener, said the event represents an important step towards building a coordinated national approach for leveraging AI to improve healthcare outcomes in Ghana.
He highlighted critical health challenges in Ghana: “Ghana’s healthcare system serves over 33 million people with one doctor serving 10,000 patients (WHO-recommends 1,000); over 900 women dying every year in pregnancy and around childbirth as do 18000 newborn babies; many rural communities lacking access to primary healthcare; the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) facing systemic threats to sustainable financing and; an increasing non-communicable disease epidemic complicating persisting endemic diseases. These are not just numbers but Ghanaian lives at risk, doctors and nurses stretched beyond limits, and a health system that must urgently do more with less”.
“For now, we must see AI is an ‘alien’ with humanoid characteristics. We must not fear it but prepare, welcome, embrace, and learn to live with it to maximise its utility for our healthcare system. Our goal should be to harness AI for impact: stronger health systems, accelerated innovations, through a sustainable framework for its adoption in healthcare” Prof Manu added.
The conference will also provide a platform for stakeholders to share experiences, identify implementation imperatives and gaps, and develop a roadmap to guide the responsible adoption of AI in healthcare in Ghana (and Africa).
It will bring together local and international experts, clinicians, researchers, policymakers, technology developers, and industry players to explore opportunities for collaboration and innovation.
Beyond knowledge sharing and practical demonstrations, the conference aims to strengthen partnerships among government agencies, academic institutions, regulatory institutions, healthcare managers and providers, technology companies, and development partners to support the growth of an AI-enabled healthcare and pharma ecosystem in Ghana.
The 1st International Conference on AI in Healthcare (ICAIH) Ghana aligns with Ghana’s broader vision of harnessing AI, technology and innovation to drive inclusive development and improve the quality, accessibility, and efficiency of healthcare delivery.
Encouraging participation, Prof. Manu called on healthcare professionals, researchers, students, technology innovators, regulators, policymakers, and stakeholders across sectors to join the conversation on shaping the future of healthcare through Artificial Intelligence.
“We welcome you all to be around the table when these pivotal transformations are shaped for advancing our health. If we must own our health, it starts from now. We cannot afford to be passive onlookers and consumers of products, but shapers of our own health destiny and health system destination” he stated.
