Revised Basic Education Curriculum to Be Presented to Government This Week
A revised curriculum covering Kindergarten through Junior High School is set to be formally presented to the Ministry of Education on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, before being forwarded to President John Dramani Mahama. The policy will then proceed to Cabinet and Parliament for further consideration.
Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu made the announcement on Monday during his presentation at the Government Accountability Series Press Conference, held at the Presidency in Accra.
According to the Minister, the curriculum overhaul is designed to introduce a “smart start” approach that places greater emphasis on integrating technology, science, engineering, and mathematics into basic education. He argued that nations succeed by investing in foundational learning, since that stage is where literacy, numeracy, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills are developed.
Iddrisu acknowledged that Ghana has historically allocated more resources to secondary education than to the basic level, a trend he said President Mahama is committed to reversing by redirecting funding toward foundational education.
He described the curriculum revision, led by the National Curriculum Review Agency (NaCCA), as one of the government’s most significant decisions. The updated curriculum will introduce coding, electronics, and artificial intelligence, alongside TVET, into basic education, with a strong focus on instilling responsibility among learners.
On funding, the Minister noted that the government has increased spending at the basic education level, including improvements to competition grants and ensuring timely disbursement. He said payments have been made to over 5.681 million beneficiaries, with GH¢64 million and an additional GH¢60 million released to support the competition grant scheme.
