Mixed reactions in Kumasi over Wontumi’s 20-year tail term
Residents of Kumasi have expressed divided opinions over the 20-year prison sentence imposed on the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, by the High Court in Accra.
Speaking to Kessben Digital, some residents described the sentence as too harsh and appealed to the appellate courts to reduce the jail term or overturn the conviction. They argued that the punishment was excessive and called for leniency.
Others, however, supported the court’s decision, insisting that if the conviction was based on the law and the evidence presented before the court, then the sentence should be respected. They said no individual should be above the law and that anyone found guilty must face the appropriate legal consequences.
The mixed reactions underscore the public interest surrounding the case, with many Ghanaians closely following developments and awaiting the outcome of the appeal announced by Chairman Wontumi’s legal team.
Chairman Wontumi was sentenced by the High Court in Accra to 20 years’ imprisonment after being convicted in the Akonta Mining illegal mining case. His lawyers have indicated they will challenge the ruling through the appellate process.
