Stop Attacking the Supreme Court – Former GBA President Slams Political Misinformation, Defends Judiciary at 150

The former President of the Ghana Bar Association (GBA), Lawyer Yaw Acheampong Boafo, has urged politicians, media commentators, and the general public to respect the integrity of the Supreme Court, warning against misinformation and attacks that undermine the country’s highest court.

Speaking during a zoom meeting on Kessben TV’s Digest about the 150th anniversary celebration of the Supreme Court, Lawyer Boafo described the milestone as a remarkable achievement, saying the court’s longevity reflects its enduring role in upholding the rule of law and justice in Ghana.

According to him, sustaining the nation’s apex court for 150 years is a unique accomplishment that deserves recognition from all Ghanaians, not just lawyers and judges.
He explained that the Supreme Court exists to interpret the law whenever disputes or differing legal interpretations arise, stressing that its constitutional mandate is essential to preserving justice and democracy.
“The celebration is not only for lawyers and judges but for every citizen because the Supreme Court serves the entire nation,” he noted.

The former GBA President further emphasized that judges determine cases based on the law and evidence before them, not personal interests. While judges may sometimes hold differing legal opinions, he said they ultimately arrive at decisions through established judicial processes.

Lawyer Boafo also expressed concern over what he described as the growing tendency of some media personalities and political actors to unfairly criticize and misrepresent the work of the Supreme Court whenever controversial rulings are delivered.
He cautioned that such conduct misinforms the public and risks eroding confidence in the judiciary.

Despite the criticism, he maintained that the Supreme Court remains committed to its constitutional duty of delivering justice impartially and safeguarding the rule of law for all Ghanaians.
