Illegal Guns Threaten National Security; Tighten Borders and Track Firearms – Security Expert

Security expert Dr. Franklyn Kwasi Binney has called for urgent measures to tackle the growing proliferation of illegal firearms in Ghana, warning that the unchecked circulation of weapons poses a serious threat to national security.

Speaking on issues surrounding firearm regulation via zoom interview on Kessben TV’s Digest show, Dr. Binney backed the suspension of firearm licensing permits and stressed that individuals found in possession of weapons after the expiry of the government’s amnesty period should face prosecution.

According to him, the country is grappling with a large number of firearms, including both locally manufactured and imported weapons, making effective monitoring and regulation increasingly difficult.
He noted that illegal firearms are often in the hands of criminals and are frequently used to facilitate criminal activities, thereby endangering public safety and national stability.

Dr. Binney further urged authorities to establish a comprehensive database on firearms in circulation to enable security agencies to track weapons and their owners more effectively.

The security expert also called for stricter regulation of local gun manufacturers, arguing that all arms producers in Ghana should be properly registered and monitored to ensure accountability and traceability of their products.
He emphasized the need to adequately resource the Small Arms Commission to enhance its capacity to regulate and manage firearms across the country.

Additionally, Dr. Binney expressed concern about Ghana’s porous borders, urging government and security agencies to strengthen border controls to curb the influx of illegal arms into the country.
“The fight against illegal firearms requires coordinated action, proper regulation, and effective border security if we are to safeguard national peace and security,” he stressed.
