300 Ghanaians evacuated from South Africa: Xenophobic attacks defeat purpose of AU – Hon. Akwasi Osei Agyei, former foreign affairs minister

Former Ejisu Juaben MP and former Foreign Affairs Minister, Hon. Akwasi Osei Agyei, has condemned the recurring xenophobic attacks against foreign nationals in South Africa, describing the incidents as contrary to the vision and purpose of the African Union (AU).

Speaking on Kessben FM, Hon. Osei Agyei revealed that nearly 300 Ghanaians were evacuated from South Africa during previous waves of attacks targeting African migrants and foreign workers. According to him, the situation remains a painful reminder of the challenges facing African unity and integration.

He stressed that the African Union was established to promote peace, cooperation, and solidarity among African countries, and therefore attacks on fellow Africans undermine the core objectives of the continental body.

“The attacks defeat the purpose of the African Union because Africans are supposed to see themselves as one people working together for development,” he stated during the interview.

Hon. Osei Agyei further called on African leaders to strengthen diplomatic engagement and public education to discourage xenophobia and protect the rights and safety of all Africans living across the continent.

He also urged South African authorities to continue taking decisive steps to prevent further violence and ensure justice for victims affected by the attacks.
