Cancer patients to receive support under “Mahama Care” at SGMC PET CT centre-Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has announced that cancer patients seeking treatment at the newly commissioned PET CT scan facility at the Sweden-Ghana Medical Centre (SGMC) in Accra will be covered under the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, popularly known as Mahama Care.

According to the President, the inclusion of the SGMC oncology centre under the Trust Fund will help ease the financial burden on families battling cancer and improve access to advanced diagnosis and treatment in Ghana.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony of the state-of-the-art PET CT facility, President Mahama said the centre comes at a critical time when many Ghanaian families are struggling with the high cost of cancer care.

“This center could not have come at a better time. The treatment and diagnosis of cancer can be very expensive. Many families are impoverished when a member of the family is afflicted by cancer,” he stated.

He explained that the establishment of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund aligns perfectly with the operationalisation of the SGMC PET CT facility, which is expected to strengthen cancer diagnosis and treatment services in the country.

“The establishment of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, also known as Mahama Care, aligns perfectly with the operationalization of SGMC and the PET scan we are commissioning today,” President Mahama noted.

He further revealed that the facility would officially be recognized under the Mahama Care programme as a certified oncology centre.

“This facility will be registered under the Mahama Care Fund as one of the recognized oncology centers for the treatment of cancer patients, and so cancer patients who come here for treatment will be covered under the Ghana Medical Trust Fund,” he added.

The newly commissioned PET CT scan facility is expected to significantly reduce Ghana’s dependence on overseas referrals for advanced cancer diagnostics while improving early detection and treatment outcomes.
