Burkina Faso lifts Tomato export ban with new restrictions

Burkina Faso has officially lifted its ban on tomato exports, but with new conditions aimed at protecting its domestic industry. According to Eric Osei Tuffour, Chairman of the Ghana Tomato Importers Association, the Burkinabè government now requires that a significant portion of tomato produce be retained for local processing.

Speaking in an interview on Kessben FM with host Wofa Kofi Appiah, Mr. Tuffour explained that while cross-border trade will resume, export volumes will be limited. “They want to prioritize their factories, so they are reducing the quantities that can be sent. he noted.

The move is expected to impact tomato supply in Ghana, where traders rely heavily on imports from Burkina Faso, especially during certain seasons. Industry players are now anticipating possible price fluctuations as supply adjusts to the new export conditions.

Meanwhile, Ghanaian importers are calling for measures to strengthen domestic tomato production to reduce dependency on external sources.
