It’s useless & needless to build markets for a 24-hour economy, the resources should be channelled into tomato production – Dennis Kwakwah

A member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dennis Kwakwah, has argued that investing in agricultural production, particularly tomatoes, would be more beneficial to Ghana’s economy than constructing new markets to support a 24-hour economy policy.

Speaking during an interview on Kessben Maakye, hosted by Wofa Kofi Appiah, Kwakwah questioned the prioritization of infrastructure projects aimed at expanding trading hours. He maintained that without sufficient local production, especially in key food items like tomatoes, extended market hours would not yield the intended economic benefits.

“It is needless to build markets for a 24-hour economy when the resources could be channelled into boosting production,” he stated. According to him, Ghana continues to rely heavily on imports of basic commodities that could otherwise be produced locally, resulting in unnecessary pressure on foreign exchange.

Kwakwah emphasized that supporting farmers with irrigation systems, improved seedlings, and access to credit would significantly enhance productivity and stabilize food prices. He added that a focus on agriculture would not only ensure food security but also create sustainable jobs across the value chain.
