Bawumia Will Deal Fairly With Cocoa Farmers—–Ejisu MP Assures

Story By Michael Ofosu-Afriyie, Kumasi

.The Member of Parliament for Ejisu, Lawyer Kwabena Boateng, has assured Ghanaian farmers that a future administration led by Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia will prioritize their welfare and professional interests.

Speaking to cocoa farmers within the Manso Adubia and Manso Nkwanta enclaves on Wednesday, the legislator emphasized that Dr. Bawumia’s track record is defined by integrity and fairness, traits he promised would be central to his governance style.

“Even amidst the global economic disruptions caused by COVID-19, President Akufo-Addo and Dr. Bawumia ensured that no cocoa farmer or agricultural worker saw their livelihood compromised,” the MP stated.

Record of Growth:
Lawyer Boateng highlighted the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) history of consistent price adjustments to support the agricultural sector:

Initial Increases:
Upon taking office in 2017, the Akufo-Addo administration raised cocoa prices from GH₵ 450.00 to over GH₵ 550.00.

Historic Milestones:
Following annual incremental adjustments, the government made a landmark announcement for the 2023/2024 season, pegging the price per bag at GH₵ 3,100.00.

Support Services:
Beyond direct payments, the MP noted that the Akufo-Addo government consistently provided periodic extension services and fertilizer supplies to optimize yields.

Critique of NDC Government:
Turning his attention to the 2028 electoral landscape, Lawyer Boateng cautioned farmers against what he termed “deceptive promises” from the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

He criticized the government for failing to match their rhetoric with action, alleging a pattern of backtracking on price commitments once in power.

“It is disheartening to see promises of GH₵ 7,000.00 per bag go unfulfilled,” Boateng decried.

“How can you deny farmers the prices established by a previous administration? It is deeply concerning that the NDC has, in the past, reduced rates from GH₵ 3,600 to GH₵ 2,500 per bag while claiming farmers are better off.”

The Ejisu legislator concluded by urging farmers to consider the tangible track record of the current administration and the enviable record of the NPP when weighing the future of their industry.
