Dera Remains Calm Amid Regional Tensions; Residents Urged Not to Panic

Story by: Maurice Otoo

A community leader in Dera has assured residents that the town remains calm despite reports of recent explosions in nearby areas and rising geopolitical tensions in the region.

Speaking via zoom on Kessben Maakye today, Albert Noble Quansah, a community leader in Dera, Dubai, daily activities in the town are continuing as normal.

He explained that an earlier explosion occurred at Angenera though the target was Bush Califa. Four days later, another blast was reported in Russakina, leaving four casualties, including two Ghanaians, a Bangladeshi national and an Indian.

Mr. Quansah noted that concerns have heightened following reports that Iran has signaled plans to target assets belonging to the United States, within the enclaves, especially the ports.

Despite the tension, he said authorities have initiated evacuation processes for all residents, although many people are reluctant to return home due to economic considerations.

“We are aware of the evacuation process but many of us are not ready to return home,” he said, expressing hope that a ceasefire could be reached soon to ease the situation.

Mr. Quansah added that many workers depend on their jobs abroad to support families back home, explaining that similar employment opportunities may be difficult to find in Ghana.

“We are breadwinners for our people back home, therefore we cannot come and add to their woes,” he stated.

He also assured families that residents continue to receive daily safety alerts on their phones and that those in Dubai are currently safe, while individuals in Qatar still have the option to evacuate if necessary.

Mr. Quansah further called on the Government of Ghana to prioritize job creation by establishing more companies in the country.

According to him, increased employment opportunities would encourage many young people to remain in Ghana rather than seek work abroad.
