Ghana, Russia Strengthen Ties in Technical Session of Political Consultations

Ghana and the Russian Federation have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations and exploring new areas of cooperation. The two countries held a Technical Session of Political Consultations on March 12, 2026, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Accra.

The meeting, led by Ambassador Eric Owusu-Boateng, Director of Europe Bureau, and H.E. Anatoly Bashkin, Director of the Department of African States, reviewed the state of bilateral relations and identified opportunities for cooperation in areas such as agriculture, industrial development, manufacturing, infrastructure, energy, and technology transfer.

Both sides emphasized the importance of expanding university partnerships in science, engineering, technology, and medicine, and explored cooperation in energy diversification, technical and vocational training, and capacity building.

The delegations also exchanged views on regional and multilateral issues, including developments in the Sahel and preparations for the Third Russia-Africa Summit in October 2026.

During the session, Ghana requested Russia’s cooperation in holding accountable a Russian citizen implicated in the non-consensual publication of explicit images of Ghanaian women. Russia assured Ghana of its cooperation in dealing with the matter.

Ghana also raised concerns about the enlistment of Ghanaian youth in Russia’s ongoing special operations, and both parties agreed to work together to address the issue.

The Head of the Russian delegation, H.E. Anatoly Bashkin, paid a courtesy call on the Chief Director of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ghana, Ambassador Khadija Iddrisu, and both sides expressed satisfaction with the outcome of the political consultations.

The 68-year partnership between Ghana and Russia has been built on trust, mutual respect, and solidarity, and the two countries are committed to strengthening their relations through sustained dialogue and cooperation.
