Top KNUST VC contenders are NPP-aligned – Papa Jay alleges political agenda

The Oforikrom Constituency Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Jerry James Sukah, popularly known as Papa Jay, has expressed concerns over what he describes as a politically motivated agenda in the ongoing process to select a new Vice-Chancellor for the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).
According to him, the top three contenders for the position are allegedly aligned with the New Patriotic Party (NPP), raising questions about the neutrality of the selection process.
Papa Jay claimed the development suggests an “NPP-motivated agenda,” arguing that it could undermine fairness in the appointment of the next leader of the university.
KNUST has begun the process to appoint a successor to Professor Rita Akosua Dickson, whose two-term tenure as the institution’s first female Vice-Chancellor is expected to end in July 2026.
As part of the process, interested candidates have been invited to submit their credentials and vision statements for consideration before the end of March 2026.
The three leading contenders for the position are Prof. Rexford Assasie-Oppong, Prof. Christian Agyare, and Prof. Poku Boansi.
Papa Jay has therefore called for transparency in the selection process to ensure that the appointment is based on merit and the best interest of the university.
