Ghana, Korea to boost maritime security cooperation and trade links

Ghana and the Republic of Korea have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening cooperation in maritime security and expanding trade relations following bilateral talks between President John Dramani Mahama and the South Korean President Lee Jae-myung.

President Mahama highlighted the importance of maritime security to both countries, particularly in addressing piracy and other threats within the Gulf of Guinea, which remains a key shipping route for global trade.

“Korea has long been a strong seafaring nation, and issues of maritime security are important to both our countries,” Mahama said during the discussions.

He noted that piracy in the Gulf of Guinea continues to pose a significant security concern for coastal states and international shipping, making collaboration between Ghana and Korea critical.

“Piracy in the Gulf of Guinea is a major concern, and we are pleased that one of the memoranda we will sign today focuses on maritime safety and cooperation,” the President stated.

Beyond maritime security, President Mahama said both countries are working to strengthen economic relations and expand trade opportunities, particularly through Ghana’s strategic position within the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

“Our goal is to position Ghana as a hub for production and exports to the rest of Africa,” he explained.

The President added that Ghana’s natural resources and growing market potential, combined with Korea’s advanced technology and innovation, present significant opportunities for mutual economic growth.

“Ghana has abundant natural and human resources, while Korea has technology and innovation. I believe we can bring these strengths together in a win-win partnership,” Mahama said.

He also emphasised the importance of strengthening diplomatic engagement and economic cooperation between the two countries, noting that Ghana is looking forward to further collaboration with Korea across multiple sectors.

According to the President, deeper cooperation in maritime security and trade will not only enhance safety along key shipping routes but also strengthen economic ties between Ghana and South Korea.
