Mahama calls for national discipline and integrity to drive Ghana’s development

President John Dramani Mahama has called on Ghanaians to embrace discipline, integrity, and patriotism as essential pillars for national development, stressing that the fight against corruption requires both strong institutions and collective citizen responsibility.
Speaking at the 69th Independence Day Celebration, President Mahama said corruption remains a major threat to Ghana’s progress, noting that resources lost to corruption directly undermine social development and economic opportunities.
“Corruption is a cancer that erodes the very foundation of our nation. Every cedi that is stolen from the public purse represents a classroom that is robbed of textbooks, a hospital that will go without medicines, and a road that will be left uncompleted,” he said.
The President emphasized that his administration is committed to strengthening anti-corruption institutions and protecting them from political interference to ensure accountability in public service.
“Under my leadership, we are not just fighting corruption with words alone. We are strengthening institutions, protecting anti-corruption agencies, and ensuring that no individual, regardless of their status or political affiliation, is above the law,” he stated.
President Mahama also stressed the need to rebuild Ghana’s social contract through discipline in public life, responsible leadership, and respect for the rule of law.
“Leadership must be accountable. Independence granted us freedom, but freedom demands responsibility. We need to reestablish discipline in our national life — discipline in how we manage public resources, discipline in adhering to the law, and discipline in how we treat one another in public life,” he added.
He urged citizens to show patriotism through their everyday actions rather than through rhetoric alone.
“True patriotism must be shown through our everyday actions — the citizen who protects public property, the public servant who treats every Ghanaian with respect, and the entrepreneur who chooses to invest in Ghana’s future,” he said.
The President further called on Ghanaians to place national interest above personal, tribal, or partisan considerations.
“Above all, we must place country above party, above tribe, and above personal interests. Ghana is bigger than any one of us,” he said.
President Mahama also appealed to the youth to uphold integrity and excellence as they prepare for future opportunities.
“The future belongs to those who prepare for it,” he said, urging young people to pursue education, skills development, and entrepreneurship.
