Eastern Regional Directorate of Social Welfare Supports Launch of “Save the Mining Communities” Initiative

The Eastern Regional Directorate of the Department of Social Welfare participated in the launch of the “Save the Mining Communities – Ghana” initiative, aimed at addressing challenges faced by communities impacted by mining activities in the region.

The launch, held at Akyem-Agyapomaa in the Abuakwa South Municipality, brought together stakeholders to address environmental and social issues caused by mining. The Department acknowledged the struggles of communities dealing with land degradation, water pollution, and health issues.

The initiative focuses on:
Providing support services for affected communities
Promoting environmental restoration and sustainable livelihoods
Strengthening community engagement and participation

Mr. Adams Donkor, Program Head for Community Care Services, represented the Directorate, emphasizing the need for collective action to create a better future for mining communities.

The event was attended by the Executive Director of Save the Mining Communities, chiefs, elders, head teachers, health officers, and media representatives.

The initiative aligns with government efforts to curb the negative impacts of mining and ensure sustainable development in affected areas.
