We are witnessing what we used to see in war movies in Dubai – Ghanaian-based in Dubai

As military tensions between the United States, Israel and Iran continue to escalate into one of the most serious Middle East confrontations in years, a Ghanaian living in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) described surreal scenes from Dubai on Ghana’s Kessben FM, saying: “We are witnessing what we used to see in war movies in Dubai.” The comments reflect the shock and anxiety among expatriates amid rising hostilities and missile interceptions over the Gulf.
The UAE has been caught up in a wave of retaliatory Iranian missile and drone attacks that followed a major joint military strike by the U.S. and Israel on Iranian territory. Emirati air-defence systems have been active, intercepting dozens of incoming projectiles, but blasts and debris have been reported across parts of Dubai and Abu Dhabi, shattering the city’s reputation as a secure, cosmopolitan hub.
Authorities temporarily closed UAE airspace, suspended flights, and activated emergency protocols as part of safety measures, leaving thousands of travellers, including Ghanaians, stranded. Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued travel advisories urging nationals already in the Middle East to remain indoors, stay in contact with diplomatic missions and avoid non-essential travel amid the deteriorating situation.
Eyewitnesses and social media footage depict residents startled by explosions and the sound of interceptions overhead, prompting comparisons with cinematic wartime scenes in typically tranquil urban settings. The government in Accra continues to monitor developments, coordinating consular support and contingency plans as the crisis unfolds
