The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has declared his intention to lead the party as National Chairman, insisting that his experience and track record matter more than his command of English.

Addressing party faithful in the Western Region ahead of the NPP’s national executive elections in September 2026, Wontumi rejected the notion that language proficiency should define leadership potential.

The outspoken NPP stalwart highlighted his extensive experience within the party, stressing that his grassroots connections and strategic planning skills make him the ideal candidate to steer the party towards electoral success.

He urged members to prioritise practical leadership qualities and results over superficial measures such as language fluency.

“Don’t judge me by my English. Judge me by my competence. Don’t judge me by how I speak English; judge me by what I have done and what I can do. Judge me by the strategies I can put in place to win the 2028 elections. After all, when I go to the markets to campaign, it is not English I will speak because the market women don’t speak English,” he said.

The NPP has already begun its internal reorganisation, with member registration scheduled from 1 to 31 March, ahead of the national executive elections.
