The Oti Regional Police Command has retrieved a large consignment of suspected cannabis concealed in a Volvo truck intercepted at the Bonakye checkpoint late last year.
According to details contained in a press release issued by the Ghana Police Service in February 2026 at its regional headquarters in Dambai, the truck, bearing registration number GC 3522-09, was stopped on December 29, 2025.
It was reportedly heading towards Kpassa after intelligence indicated that it was transporting illegal goods.
Police said the driver and another occupant fled the scene upon interception, abandoning the vehicle with the ignition key still in place.
Following months of legal processes, the truck was opened on February 24, 2026, at Nkwanta after a court order was secured from the Jasikan Circuit Court, presided over by His Honour Lambert Y. Kerieba.
The exercise was conducted in the presence of personnel from the Police Service, the Military, the National Intelligence Bureau, Defence Intelligence, the Ghana National Fire Service and the Narcotics Control Commission in Jasikan, as well as members of the media.
A thorough search of the vehicle uncovered 320 cartons of bottled mineral water used to conceal 91 bales of suspected cannabis. In total, the haul amounted to 7,173 slabs, with an estimated street value of more than GH¢1.4 million.
Police confirmed that the exhibits have been retained as investigations continue, with efforts underway to identify and apprehend those responsible.
The Command has appealed to the public to volunteer credible information to assist in combating the trafficking and distribution of illegal drugs within the region and beyond.
