NDC to leverage NPP primary controversies ahead of 2028 – Owusu Achiaw
The Communication Officer of the NDC UK/Ireland Chapter, Mr. Owusu Achiaw, has disclosed that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is poised to capitalise on controversies that emerged during the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) recent presidential primaries as the country looks ahead to the 2028 general elections.
Speaking in an interview with Akua-Piesie Asare Bediako on Bethel TV on the internal dynamics of political parties, Mr. Achiaw said while internal elections are a normal feature of democratic practice, the nature of exchanges during the NPP’s presidential race revealed significant divisions within the governing party.
“In every political party, internal elections come with disagreements, but what we witnessed during the NPP presidential primaries went beyond healthy competition. There were clear misunderstandings and abusive exchanges among aspirants and their supporters,” he stated.
According to him, the NDC has been closely monitoring developments within the NPP and has taken steps to preserve materials from the internal contest.
“As a vigilant and observant party, we have saved videos and audio recordings of the abusive words and internal attacks that occurred during the NPP primaries. Those materials are being kept safely, and they will be relevant when the time comes,” Mr. Achiaw disclosed.
He stressed that statements made against leading figures such as Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and Hon. Kennedy Agyapong during the primaries could resurface during future political campaigns.
“In politics, words matter. Anything that was said against Dr. Bawumia, Hon. Kennedy Agyapong, or any other aspirant will not simply vanish. Whatever they said about themselves can and will be used in 2028,” he asserted.
Mr. Achiaw further revealed that the NDC is preparing to conduct its own internal elections later this year, beginning at the polling station level before progressing through constituency, regional, national, and diaspora structures.
“Our internal elections will start from the polling station level, then constituency, regional, national, and finally the diaspora. We are mindful of the challenges that come with internal contests, and we are working to correct past mistakes to ensure a smoother process,” he explained.
He acknowledged that tensions are inevitable during internal contests but emphasized the NDC’s commitment to promoting unity and avoiding personal attacks.
“Every party experiences some level of tension during internal elections, but as NDC, we strive to stay away from abusive words. Internal competition should not destroy individuals or weaken party unity,” he added.
Mr. Achiaw concluded that the NDC remains focused on strengthening its structures while keeping a close watch on political developments as 2028 approaches.
“The NDC is very vigilant. We observe carefully, and we are ready to capitalise on the NPP’s own internal contradictions when the time is right,” he said.
