Galamsey Fight: Chiefs and Government officials must be probed – Kwabena Owusu Dankwah (KOD)
Speaking on his morning programme, Owusu Dankwah argued that Ghana’s battle against illegal mining will remain ineffective unless accountability is extended to all stakeholders, including chiefs and state authorities. According to him, the persistent destruction of rivers and forest reserves suggests possible complicity or negligence at various levels of leadership.
He stressed that chiefs, as custodians of the land, must be transparent about activities taking place within their jurisdictions. At the same time, he insisted that government appointees and regulatory bodies should also be investigated to determine whether enforcement lapses are due to corruption, political interference, or weak oversight.
Kwabena Owusu Dankwah noted that while several anti-galamsey operations have been launched over the years, the problem continues to resurface, raising questions about commitment and consistency. “We cannot fight galamsey selectively,” he reportedly stated, emphasizing that the law must apply equally to everyone.
Galamsey remains a major environmental and national concern, with water bodies heavily polluted and farmlands degraded. His comments have since fueled debate among listeners, many of whom agree that a non-partisan and comprehensive probe could restore public confidence in the fight against illegal mining.
