Almost everybody in Ghana is playing hypocrisy around Galamsey – Kwasi Mensah
Speaking on Kessben FM during a programme hosted by KOD, Mensah stated that “almost everybody in Ghana is playing hypocrisy” when it comes to addressing the illegal mining crisis.
According to him, many individuals publicly condemn galamsey due to its devastating effects on water bodies, forests, and farmlands, yet some of the same voices either benefit indirectly from the activity or remain silent when their associates are involved. He argued that political leaders, local authorities, and even sections of the public often take positions based on convenience rather than principle.
Mensah emphasized that the fight against galamsey cannot succeed if stakeholders continue to apply double standards. He noted that while successive governments have launched operations to clamp down on illegal mining, enforcement efforts are frequently weakened by political interference and lack of sustained commitment.
Galamsey remains one of Ghana’s most pressing environmental challenges, with several major rivers polluted and forest reserves severely degraded. The issue continues to generate intense national debate, with calls for stricter enforcement, non-partisan action, and stronger community engagement.
