Attack of Ghanaian traders in Burkina: It’s the work of Ghana’s foreign minister to come clear on it, take the steps, not the work of the interior ministry – Major Derick Oduro

Tensions are rising following reports of a terrorist attack affecting some Ghanaian traders operating in Burkina Faso, sparking political debate back home in Ghana.
Speaking on Kessben FM during an interview with host Wofa Kofi Appiah, former Defence Minister Major Derick Oduro called for swift diplomatic action to address the situation.
According to Major Oduro, the matter falls squarely under the responsibility of Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Ministry rather than the Interior Ministry. He emphasized that incidents involving Ghanaian nationals outside the country are diplomatic and international security issues, which require engagement between governments.
“The work of responding to such an attack is not for the Interior Ministry,” he reportedly stated. “It is the responsibility of the Foreign Minister to come clear on the matter and take the necessary steps.”
The attack, believed to have been carried out by terrorist elements operating within Burkina Faso, has reportedly affected Ghanaian traders conducting business across the border. Burkina Faso, like several countries in the Sahel region, has in recent years faced persistent security threats from extremist groups, creating heightened risks for foreign nationals and traders.
Major Oduro urged the Government of Ghana to engage its Burkinabe counterparts to ensure the safety and protection of Ghanaian citizens. He stressed the importance of clear communication, diplomatic coordination, and immediate measures to safeguard traders who contribute significantly to cross-border commerce between the two countries.
