
A Cyber Security Expert, Dr. Kofi Annan, has raised concerns over the increasing cases of cybercrime in the country, particularly crimes targeting young women, and is calling for urgent reforms to strengthen Ghana’s digital security framework.
Speaking to Kojo Preko Dankwa on Kessben Maakye today, Dr. Annan cited recent developments on a supposed Russian national’s expose involving some Ghanaian women shows a worrying trend of online abuse and exploitation, especially involving the circulation of inappropriate content.
He noted that some of the videos currently circulating may not necessarily be considered as rape cases, but their content and widespread sharing pose serious criminal concerns.
It has been observed that the man involved operated with a secret Camara device fixed on his spectacle in filming the victims unawares.
Dr. Annan stressed that the rise in cybercrime requires swift national action to curb the dangers associated with digital abuse. He urged authorities to tighten laws around online content creation and distribution, emphasizing that stronger cybersecurity systems are critical to protecting citizens.
“The case underlines the national security implications of cyber-related crimes.
We need to take decisive action to secure our systems and prevent the spread of harmful content,” he added.
He further called for stricter regulations to prevent illicit online activities and protect the vulnerable .
According to him, digital platforms should be monitored more effectively, and content involving children must be taken down immediately, with perpetrators facing severe legal consequences.
Dr. Annan also advocated the establishment of a dedicated crime unit within law enforcement agencies to focus specifically on online offenses and content regulation.
He concluded by urging collaboration between government, cybersecurity agencies, and digital platform operators to strengthen monitoring mechanisms and ensure that Ghana’s cyberspace remains safe and secure for all users.
