Congratulations to All Former Presidential Aspirants: The Victory Is an NPP Victory

The successful conclusion of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential primary marks another important chapter in the party’s democratic journey. The process was competitive, vibrant, and engaging, reflecting the strength and maturity of the NPP as a political tradition. As Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia emerges as the winner and flagbearer of the party, it is only proper to extend heartfelt congratulations not only to him, but also to all the former presidential aspirants who offered themselves for service. Their ideas, campaigns, sacrifices, and nationwide mobilization enriched the contest and strengthened the party. Ultimately, this is not the victory of one man alone; it is an NPP victory.
With victory, however, comes responsibility. It is incumbent on Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, as the winner, to take the lead in bringing the other aspirants and their supporters fully on board. The primary is over, and the focus must now shift from competition to collaboration. Winning the internal contest is only the first step; winning the confidence of the Ghanaian electorate in the general election requires a united, disciplined, and energized party.
In the spirit of unity and reconciliation, Dr. Bawumia should also consider extending an olive branch to his fellow aspirants. During primaries, emotions can run high and words may be spoken that unintentionally hurt others. A sincere apology to the other aspirants; if anything was said or done that caused offense; and a request for their forgiveness would go a long way in healing wounds and building trust. Such humility will not diminish his leadership; rather, it will elevate it and set a powerful example for supporters across the country.
At this critical moment, it is also important to remind ourselves of a fundamental truth: we are Ghanaians first. *We must not allow religion, ethnicity, or any other identity marker to divide us*. Ghana’s democracy has thrived because of tolerance and mutual respect. Around the world, examples abound that leadership is about competence and vision, not religious affiliation. New York State, for instance, has a Christian majority, yet the people of New York elected a Muslim, Ramdan Kwame Mamdani, to lead the city as mayor. This clearly demonstrates that inclusive politics is both possible and beneficial. The NPP must remain steadfast in its commitment to national unity and religious harmony.
A strong appeal must therefore be made to the other presidential aspirants to come fully on board and, equally important, to encourage their supporters to do the same. Their followers are loyal party members whose energy and commitment are essential for the task ahead. No supporter should feel sidelined or alienated after the primaries. The party needs every hand on deck.
To achieve this, Dr. Bawumia should initiate a deliberate and well-coordinated unity campaign as soon as possible. Unity does not come automatically after a hard-fought contest; it must be intentionally pursued. This unity campaign should involve joint engagements with former aspirants, internal consultations, grassroots outreach, and consistent messaging that emphasizes togetherness, respect, and a shared vision. Unity is work, and it requires time, effort, and sincerity.
*Supporters also have a critical role to play. All NPP supporters must desist from using words, videos, images, or insinuations that attack or demean either the losing candidates or the winning candidate.* Such actions only deepen divisions and undermine the collective strength of the party. Political discourse must be guided by discipline, respect, and responsibility, especially in the age of social media.
Finally, a special message must go to NPP patrons, elders, and senior members. Their involvement is crucial at this stage. They must actively engage in the unity campaign, offering counsel, mediation, and moral leadership. Their influence can help calm tensions, bridge differences, and reinforce the party’s core values.
In conclusion, this is a defining moment for the New Patriotic Party. Congratulations once again to all former presidential aspirants. With humility, forgiveness, inclusion, and deliberate unity, the NPP can move forward as one strong family—ready to secure victory in the next general election and continue serving the people of Ghana.
Humble request from Tony Osei-Owusu, Secretary NPP-NY Chapter
