Baba Jamal Submits Nomination Forms: “It’s My Backyard, I’ll Win”

Baba Jamal, the NDC parliamentary candidate for Ayawaso East, has submitted his nomination forms to the Electoral Commission (EC) in Accra, amidst a show of support from party loyalists. The by-election is necessitated by the passing of the incumbent MP, Naser Toure Mahama, who died on January 4, 2026.

Jamal, a former High Commissioner to Nigeria, was cleared by the NDC’s Functional Executive Committee to contest the March 3 by-election, despite allegations of vote-buying during the party’s primary. He has denied these allegations, stating that his campaign adhered to party rules.

At the EC office, Jamal submitted all required documentation and paid the necessary fees, accompanied by supporters clad in white attire. He expressed confidence in his victory, citing his connection to the constituency.

Some supporters ruled out Amina Adam, the widow of the deceased MP, from contesting, citing Islamic traditions and her current roles on three separate boards. The EC has set the filing fee for the by-election at GH¢10,000.
