Mahama Meets UN Chief, Discusses African Security and Democratic Governance

President John Dramani Mahama on Friday held high-level talks with United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres on the sidelines of the 39th Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

The bilateral meeting focused on key security challenges confronting the African continent, particularly the worsening security situation in the Sahel region, as well as measures to strengthen democratic governance across Africa.
During the discussions, Secretary-General Guterres acknowledged President Mahama’s upcoming assumption of the African Union chairmanship in 2027. He commended Ghana’s strong leadership role, especially within the West African subregion, and expressed confidence in the country’s ability to contribute significantly to continental stability and development.

Regional peace and security dominated the talks, with special attention given to the volatile situation in member states of the Alliance of Sahelian States (AES). President Mahama briefed the UN chief on his ongoing diplomatic engagements aimed at mediating conflicts and restoring stability in the troubled region.
Mr Guterres reaffirmed the United Nations’ full support for President Mahama as he prepares to assume the leadership of the continental body, recognising Ghana’s expected role in addressing Africa’s pressing security and governance challenges.
At the end of the meeting, the UN Secretary-General presented President Mahama with a special gift — a copy of the United Nations Charter translated into all six official UN languages.
