AGA Obuasi Mine & Partners (GhIE-WInE, UMA, SGS ) inspire girls at Asare Bediako SHS to pursue careers in STEM
AGA Obuasi Mine, in partnership with GhIE-WInE, Underground Mining Alliance (UMA), and SGS, has inspired female students of Asare Bediako Senior High School to pursue careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) as part of activities marking this year’s International Day for Women and Girls in Science.
The empowerment session, held at the school in Akrokerri, formed part of global commemorations under the theme, “From Vision to Impact: Redefining STEM by Closing the Gender Gap.” The initiative sought to encourage young girls to develop interest in STEM disciplines while exposing them to the diverse career opportunities available within the fields.
The event brought together accomplished industry professionals and mentors many of whom are practitioners at the Obuasi Mine who shared personal stories about their academic journeys, workplace experiences, and the resilience required to succeed in male-dominated industries.
Through candid discussions and practical insights, the speakers challenged the students to overcome stereotypes, embrace innovation, and confidently pursue careers in science and engineering.
Speaking at the event, Ing. Nana Yaw Nti Owusu-Adanse, Engineering Manager – Process Plant at AGA Obuasi Mine, encouraged the students to take advantage of STEM education and strive for excellence.
“Opportunities in STEM are vast and transformative. You must prepare yourselves, build competence, and compete confidently alongside your male counterparts,” he advised.
He reaffirmed the Mine’s commitment to achieving 50 percent female representation by 2030, emphasizing the importance of mentorship and leadership development in building a strong pipeline of female professionals within the mining industry and beyond.
A key highlight of the programme was the official launch of the Mentorship Programme for Girls in Science at Asare Bediako SHS. The initiative is designed to provide structured guidance, career exposure, and professional support to female students pursuing STEM-related subjects.
The engagement underscores AGA Obuasi Mine’s broader commitment to sustainable development and community investment, particularly in education and gender inclusion.
By fostering interest in STEM among young girls, the Mine and its partners aim to contribute meaningfully to bridging the gender gap in science and technology fields.
