Alex Akuoko Expresses Disappointment Over Ayawaso East Election Committee Findings
Story: Maurice Otoo

The former NDC Parliamentary candidate for Bortianor – Ngleshie Amanfro has expressed disappointment over the findings and recommendations of the committee set up to investigate alleged malpractices in the Ayawaso East election.
Speaking with Kojo Preko Dankwa on Kessben Maakye today, Akuoko said he was dissatisfied with the outcome of the committee’s work, describing the situation as worrying for the party’s internal democratic processes.
He cautioned against the practice of vote buying, stressing that such acts would allow “corrupt and wicked people” to take over the country’s politics. According to him, monetisation of internal elections undermines merit and weakens the integrity of political leadership.
Akuoko noted that he had aligned with the Majority’s proposal to annul the election, but said it was unfortunate that a different decision had been taken.
He further described the development as a “very bad precedent” that poses a threat to upcoming internal elections.
Touching on the broader political landscape, Akuoko alleged that the quality of Parliamentary work has been declining since 1996 because political parties often fail to prioritise capacity, knowledge and expertise when selecting candidates, focusing instead on financial strength.
He called for reforms to ensure competence and integrity to remain central in the selection of political leaders.
