Aku Addy: Preparation, collaboration key to creative success

Aku Addy, Brand Architect and Founder of Wollo, has emphasized that success in the creative industry hinges on being prepared for opportunities and knowing how to harness them effectively.
She made the comments at the Drive to Inspire — Africa (DTI-A) NextUp breakfast meeting, held at the Accra International Conference Centre on the sidelines of the Africa Prosperity Dialogues 2026 on Wednesday, 4th February 2026.
As the name suggests, NextUp emphasizes that African youth are next in line for global leadership, economic growth, expanded opportunities, and greater recognition on the world stage. During the session, the panellists explored the creative economy, with Vanessa Appiagyei, lawyer, serving as the moderator of the breakfast meeting.
Touching on strategies for artistic growth, Addy underlined the need for creators to anticipate and maximize moments that can advance their careers.
“I think being prepared for the moment counts—not necessarily in the way you expect, but all the guidance and advice shared by others matters. In the structure of the creative space, you can take the lead when the right moment comes,” Addy said.
She explained that moments of opportunity are often unplanned, and success depends on being ready to use them as a launchpad. “You might pick up something you created, or someone might gift it to you, and suddenly there’s attention on your work. The question is: do you have the preparation to meet that demand? Can you turn that moment into a partnership, use it in your reels, or leverage it in other ways?”
Addy also highlighted the value of collaboration, noting that working with others can help creators maximize the impact of these opportunities. “Cross-collaboration often comes into play. You begin to see how someone else can help you make the most out of that moment,” she added.
Pivoting to the topic of funding, Addy referenced a recent statement by music producer Meister, who pointed out that traditional finance does not yet understand creativity. She stressed the importance for creators to develop business literacy alongside their artistic skills. “Creators must learn to speak business while dreaming creatively,” she said.
